Hide your Folder in XP without any Software

Generally we use 3rd party software to hide any file in Windows.

Also the Folder Options>>Hide All Files and Folder is a very weak method to hide files.

A Strong method under Windows XP is also there which allows you to hide a folder without anybody seeing it and it does not require a password also. It is the best possible hideout that Windows can give your folder.

First create a new folder somewhere on your hard drive,

when you name it hold down “Alt” and press “0160?

This will create an invisible space so it will appear as if it has no name.

Then right click in and select “Properties” select the tab “customize” and

select “change icon”.

Scroll along and you should find a few blank spaces.

Click on any one and click ok.

The folder will be invisible to hide all your personal files….

Alt+255 also work. Now you can even make it a hidden folder by going to its properties and now you have a hidden folder.

How To Save Income Tax In India?

As per the government law, it is mandatory for every citizen to pay the income tax. Tax assessment takes place every year in the month of March. Government has given so many benefits to the taxpayers. Tax payment is applicable for a person who is generating profit by any mode either by the business or from the job. In any of the public or private limited company, there are shareholders then the tax will not be exempted on the individual basis. The calculation is based on the annual profit generated by the organization.

In India, there are various tax slabs for the male and female and as per the annual salary, the tax deduction takes place. If a male individual earns (in Rs) 160,001 to 500,000, the tax would be 10% if it exceeds from 500,000 to 800,000 the tax would be 20% if it exceeds from 800,000 the tax would be 30%. Tax slabs for the female individual is different from the male individual, the tax limit for the female start from 190,001. For 190,001 the tax is 10%, from 500,000 to 800,000 tax is 20% whereas for above 800,000 tax would be 30%.

To get the tax benefit, it is important to show the investment proof. Tax waiver is applicable if the investment has done in the following:

Mutual funds – There are several government and private mutual funds available in the market such as State Bank of India mutual funds, Franklin Templeton, Kotak Mahindra and ICICI. Investor has to take care that tax waiver is available only on those mutual funds that have a locking period; a fund without a locking period is not eligible for the income tax benefit.

Home Loan – If an individual has purchased any property on loan, a tax waiver is applicable on it.

House Rent – House rent is another mode to save the income tax. While filing for income tax, tax receipt should be attached.

Insurance Policy- Government has given tax benefit on different type of insurance policies such as life insurance policy and health Care. This should be noted that no tax benefit is given for the General insurance like motor insurance etc.

While filing for the income tax it is useful to attach the receipt of the documents as per the above list.

What Does 3G Mean?

Nowadays, everybody has a mobile phone. Whether they're on a contract or a pay as you go tariff, the mobile phone has become an essential item for many people. this article will be taking a look at the the mobile phone's history - as well as its future - in order to find out more about the now essential telecommunications device.

Mobile phones started life as the two way radio, which was also called mobile rigs. these were installed in vehicles such as minicabs, police cars and ambulances, but were not strictly mobile phones as they were not normally connected to the telephone network. while the very first mobile phones were installed permanently in vehicles, later versions such as the transportables, also called bag phones, could also be carried, and can be used as either portable or as mobile two-way radios.

The first generation of mobile phones are often called 1G. These mobile phones are the analog devices that were introduced in the eighties & continued until being replaced by 2G mobile phones, which ran on digital networks. in fact, even though 1G & 2G systems use digital signals to connect the radio towers to the rest of the telephone network, the voice itself during a phone call encoded to digital signals in 2g while voices on 1G phones aren't.

Second generation, also called 2-g, mobile telephones were introduced in the nineties. 2-g phone systems were characterised by their use of digital transmission and the introduction of advanced and fast phone to network signalling.

The birth of 2-g systems saw telephones move from friendly 1g telephones to little handheld items, which were much more portable. this change was possible through technological developments including more advanced batteries and energy saving electronics.

The second generation mobile telephones had severaladvantages over 1g items. These included text messaging, which became possible on gsm networks initially and eventually on all digital networks. the earliest machine-sent message was sent in 1991 in the uk. the earliest person to person sms text message was sent in 1993 in finland. sms text messaging soon became the preferred method of communication and the public now prefer sending text messages to placing voice calls.

3-g is the term applied to the third generation of mobile phone standards & technology. 3g follows 2g mobile phone technology.

The birth of 3-g technologies allow network operators for instance Vodafone give their users a larger range of more advanced services. These include video calls& wireless internet.

Even though 3-g was successfully introduced throughout the world, issues have been raised by both 3-g providers & users, comprising of costly phones. in addition to this, there's numerous differences in the licensing terms.

Ever since the launch of 3-g mobile phone technology. people have been talking about 4g. 4g technology will signify the future of mobile telephones, creating the most sophisticated handsets and best services yet. in actual fact, one of the next services to be developed is thought to be live streaming of radio and tv shows to 3-g handsets is and shops including real and disney recently announcing that they'll be offering services like these.

In conclusion, even though the history of mobile phones they have come a long way in the past few years, it also indicates that they'll go even further still.

Easy Ways To Maximize Your Laptop's Battery Life

The original title of this write-up was going to be some thing along the lines of "Why does my laptop battery life suck?" due to the fact that's precisely the question most of us ask as soon as our battery life starts acquiring shorter and shorter. It is not uncommon to uncover an old laptop that has a lifespan of about 20 minutes. They're essentially absolutely nothing far more than an pricey Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). This seriously limits the laptop's portability.

It turns out that probably the most critical factor for maximizing your battery life is some thing most of us would by no means have thought of: matching your battery to the correct charger. Based on Jerry, you'll need to make sure that the charger and battery match and that the charger is of top quality. Genuinely, the only factor it is possible to do to make certain this would be to invest in your laptop supplies from the manufacturer and only invest in them for your precise model.

The truth is that even a tiny distinction in output voltage between chargers can have a severe effect on the overall lifespan of your battery by either over- or under-charging the battery.

You could get a less expensive charger pretty much anywhere, but if it truly is off by even as small as 10 millivolts, you might get much less of a charge and won't get optimum performance. By way of example, a four.1V battery charged having a four.05V charger might be beneficial for about four,000 charges. Growing the voltage of the charger to four.250 volts, can lessen that number to much less than 100!

Not just is it a fantastic thought to buy chargers and additional batteries from the laptop manufacturer, however it is ideal to buy these issues at or close to the very same time as you get your laptop. This can minimize the chances of manufacturing adjustments or differences inside the accessories.

The second vital aspect of battery life is temperature.

It is strange but accurate: laptops aren't truly developed for laps. Searching at the bottom of a laptop shows rubber bumpers or feet, which maintain it lifted off of surfaces just sufficient for appropriate ventilation. When that space is blocked (as an example, by putting it on your lap), you close that space along with the laptop is forced to run significantly hotter than it must. Performing this on a standard basis will almost certainly shorten the life of the HP laptop battery.

As a general rule, if your laptop leading is burning you or is too hot to be comfy in your lap, the cooling system is being interrupted and you are shortening its lifespan.

Instead of placing the laptop directly in your lap, try using a laptop desk, which are designed to rest in your lap but still allow the laptop sufficient airflow.

You also want to avoid temperature cycling (allowing your laptop to get very warm and very cold repeatedly) can also seriously damage your Dell inspiron battery life. This means you should try to avoid leaving your laptop in the elements or even inside your automobile on a really hot or cold day.

One widespread concern is whether or not leaving the laptop plugged in too long would damage the laptop batteries. Today's models, nonetheless, are made for this type of practice, so it really is a non-issue.

Needless to say, all of this guidance assumes your laptop has a well created power supply and charger. Some lower end models are not ideal and our widespread minds may possibly not be able to tell the difference. Most of us just have to trust that the manufacturers know what they're doing.

GSM codes

Most, if not all, of the commands described here are accessible via the menu of your cellphone. But what happens if you're using a new phone that you don't quite have at your fingertips, or a borrowed phone while yours is in for repairs? What happens if you need the information now but don't have the time to go delving into the manual? Always assuming you have the manual…

Barring restrictions put in place by your cellphone operator, the GSM codes described here should work on any GSM phone. Or, put in other words, if any of the network operations described below fail, it is because your operator doesn't implement them correctly, if at all.

There are very few concepts to learn, and once they are learned you'll be able to access information and perform network settings regardless of the phone you're using and how well (or how little little...) you know its menus.

SERIAL NUMBER

You should make a note of your phone's serial number, or IMEI number and keep it in a safe place. In the event of you losing the phone or it being stolen, you'll need to have it deactivated so that whoever now has it cannot run up a huge bill for you. For this, you'll need to give your operator the phone's IMEI number.

With the phone in standby, key this on its keypad:

*#06#

FIRMWARE VERSION

NB: This code is specific to Nokia phones.

As new features are added to phones, you can have your phone updated to include them. This usually entails taking the phone to an authorized dealer, where they will either perform the firmware upgrade for you on the premises or send the phone off to a service centre for this to be done. More recent phones can often be updated by the user or "OTA" (Over The Air) via wireless transfer. If the phone is still under warranty then the manufacturer will usually perform the update free of charge. If the user bricks the phone by screwing up the update at home, this tends to void the warranty.

Note that the ability to upgrade your phone's firmware is also dependant on your operator. Most operators install customised firmware into the handsets that they provide, so you might have to wait for them to provide updated versions of their firmware when the phone's manufacturer has already released new firmware for unbranded phones.

This code (only on a Nokia phone) will reveal the date and version of the firmware currently installed in the phone:

*#0000#

CHANGE PIN CODE

You can change the PIN code used to protect your SIM from unauthorized use with the following sequence:

**04*OLD_PIN*NEW_PIN*NEW_PIN#

Eg.: assuming your current PIN is 1234 and you want to make it 5678, you'd use this:

**04*1234*5678*5678#

Note that some phones (my Motorola RAZR V3 for one) intercept this sequence and display windows asking you to input the old and new PINs as soon as they see the **04* sequence.

WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY

Many handsets have BlueTooth connectivity built in so that the user can use wireless earpieces, in-car kits and the like. Some also have on-board 802.11b/g wireless network connectivity. The following two key sequences, which are specific to Symbian S60 phones such as the Nokia N95, allow the user to get information about these types of connectivity.

BlueTooth BD address

This will show you the BD address of your phone's built-in BlueTooth adapter:

*#2820# (*#bta0#)

WLAN MAC address

This code will show you the MAC address of the built-in WiFi adapter. It can be useful if, for example, you need to add it to your wireless router's "allow" table so you can access the Internet over your your WLAN:

*#62209526# (*#mac wlan#)

SYSTEM RESET

In the event of your phone becoming unstable (crashing, rebooting of its own accord, switching off for no apparent reason etc.), it can be beneficial to perform a system reset. Note that these procedures will erase the built-in memory of your phone (but not the contents of a memory card in the expansion slot), so make a backup of the contents before proceeding − either onto a memory card if you have one and if your phone allows this feature, or to your computer using software provided with your phone. Also ensure that your battery is fully charged.

Note that these codes are also specific to Nokia phones. The "Restore factory defaults" code works both on S60 and earlier S40 phones while the "Soft reset" and "Hard reset" functions only work with phones that are S60 2nd edition and later.

Restore Factory Defaults

Dial this to erase all user settings and revert to factory defaults:

*#7780# (*#rst0#)

Soft Reset

If the above didn't restore stability to your phone then maybe it's necessary to clean deeper into its innards. The next step is the "Soft reset":

*#7370# (*#res0#)

You will be prompted for the phone's "security code" when attempting to revert to factory defaults or perform a soft reset. The default security code on all Nokia handsets is 12345. If you have forgotten it then the only option you have is the hard reset, which wipes everything in the phone.

If you have a phone on which the hard reset cannot be performed by the end user, you will have to take it into an authorized dealer for them to do it. They will want proof that you own the phone before wiping it for you (a copy of the invoice with your name and the phone's IMEI number printed on it should be good).

Hard Reset

The final thing to try if neither the revert to factory defaults nor the soft reset put things right is the hard reset. Your fingers are going to have to do a bit of gymnastics here.

Power the phone off.
Press and hold down the '3', '*' and green 'call' keys ('multimedia', '*' and 'call' for the N78, or red, green and camera keys for a 5800 XpressMusic running firmware V20 or later - the operation is not possible on firmware V10 or V11).
While maintaining these 3 keys down, switch the phone on.
Wait until the phone shows signs of life such as the manufacturer's logo or a language selection screen.
Release the 3 keys.

NETWORK OPERATIONS

Note that the codes given so far are not really GSM codes as such in that they don't allow you to interact with the GSM network. The codes *#06# and **04* are, however, standard across all GSM phones. While the operations described above complete automatically as soon as you type the final "#", network operations require you to send in to the operator the GSM code you've typed. Usually, this is achieved by pressing the key you normally use to dial a number − most of the time it's a green key. So, while it isn't mentioned explicitly, there is an implicit "send" or "dial" after each of the commands below.

Caller Line ID (CLI)

To find out whether your operator's default behaviour is to send your CLI when you place calls or to conceal it, you can interrogate the network with this GSM code:

*#31#

The network's default behaviour can be overridden on a per-call basis. In order to conceal your number when placing a call, you prefix the number you want to dial with #31#. So, for example, if you want to call 0123.456.7890 without revealing your number, you'd dial:

#31#01234567890

Conversely, if your network's default is to conceal CLI but you want your correspondent to see your CLI regardless, you prefix the number you're dialling with *31#. Thus, to force CLI to be sent while dialling the number above, you'd dial:

*31#01234567890

Call Waiting

Some operators provide the user with a call waiting function. Using this facility, you can have two people on the line and switch between them (but not speak to both simultaneously). This function, if supported by your line, can be interrogated and set using GSM codes. First, find out if it is active on your line with this code:

*#43#

If you get an error message in return, such as "not supported" or "undefined result", then call waiting is not supported by your line. Otherwise, you will be told whether the service is active or not.

In order to activate the service (if your line supports it), use this code:

*43#

In order to deactivate it:

#43#

Call Divert

The GSM standard knows two kinds of call divert:

Unconditional call divert
Conditional call divert

Conditional call divert occurs on any of three conditions:

Divert if no answer after 'x' seconds
Divert if unavailable (cellphone switched off or out of range)
Divert if line busy

Furthermore, the GSM standard knows three different types of call:

Voice call: normal communications when you pick up the phone to talk to someone.
Fax calls: the GSM terminal being called is a fax machine.
Data calls: your cellphone is acting as a modem hooked up to a computer accepting inbound data from elsewhere.

Each call type is assigned a number: 11 for voice calls, 13 for fax calls, 25 for data calls.

» Unconditional Call Divert

Unconditional call divert of all call types is achieved using this GSM code:

**21*target_number#

Eg.: to divert all inbound calls to 0123.456.7890 unconditionally, use this code:

**21*0123456789#

To cancel the unconditional call divert of all call types, use this code:

##21#

To find out if unconditional call divert is set up on your line, use:

*#21#

This will inform you of the unconditional call divert status of all the types of call supported by your handset.

Of course, it is also possible to divert unconditionally only calls of a particular type. This is achieved with GSM codes of the following format:

**21*target_number*CT#

…where "CT" is the 2-digit number for the call type you want to divert. So, for example, if I only want to divert fax calls unconditionally to my home fax number, which is 0987.654.3210, while still receiving voice and data calls on my cellphone, I'd use this code:

**21*09876543210*13#

Unconditional call divert status for individual call types can also be obtained from the network:

*#21*CT#

Eg.: is there an unconditional call divert set up for voice calls?

*#21*11#

Finally, unconditional call divert can also be cancelled for individual call types:

##21*CT#

Eg.: to cancel the unconditional call divert of fax calls set up above:

##21*13#

Recap:

*#21# : Interrogate unconditional call divert, all call types
*#21*11# : Interrogate unconditional call divert, voice calls
*#21*13# : Interrogate unconditional call divert, fax calls
*#21*25# : Interrogate unconditional call divert, data calls

**21*number# : Activate unconditional call divert, all call types, to number
**21*number*11# : Activate unconditional call divert, voice calls, to number
**21*number*13# : Activate unconditional call divert, fax calls, to number
**21*number*25# : Activate unconditional call divert, data calls, to number

##21# : Cancel unconditional call divert, all call types
##21*11# : Cancel unconditional call divert, voice calls
##21*13# : Cancel unconditional call divert, fax calls
##21*25# : Cancel unconditional call divert, data calls

» Conditional Call Divert: Call Divert if no answer

Under normal circumstances, if your phone rings for 20 seconds and you don't pick it up, the inbound call is diverted to your voicemail so that the caller can leave a message. You can change this default behaviour and have the call forwarded to another line, such as your land line or another cellphone. In order to do so, use this code:

**61*number*tt#

…where "tt" is the number of seconds you want your phone to ring before the call is diverted to "number". Possible values for "tt" are 05, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.

The status of the conditional call divert if no answer can be obtained from the network:

*#61#

Conditional call divert if no answer can be cleared with this code:

##61#

Note that the usual effect of clearing the conditional call divert if no answer is not to make your phone ring forever if someone calls. It resets to the default setting of diverting to your voicemail after 20 seconds.

The above codes apply to all call types. It is also possible to have the conditional call divert if no answer apply to only one type of call, in which case they become of this form:

*#61*CT# : Interrogate conditional call divert if no answer for call type CT
**61*number*CT*tt# : Activate conditional CT call divert to number if no answer after tt seconds
##61*CT# : Cancel conditional call divert if no answer for call type CT

Recap:

*#61# : Interrogate conditional call divert if no answer, all call types
*#61*11# : Interrogate conditional call divert if no answer, voice calls
*#61*13# : Interrogate conditional call divert if no answer, fax calls
*#61*25# : Interrogate conditional call divert if no answer, data calls

**61*number*tt# : Conditional divert all calls to number if no answer after tt seconds
**61*number*11*tt# : Conditional divert voice calls to number if no answer after tt seconds
**61*number*13*tt# : Conditional divert fax calls to number if no answer after tt seconds
**61*number*25*tt# : Conditional divert data calls to number if no answer after tt seconds

##61# : Cancel conditional call divert if no answer, all call types
##61*11# : Cancel conditional call divert if no answer, voice calls
##61*13# : Cancel conditional call divert if no answer, fax calls
##61*25# : Cancel conditional call divert if no answer, data calls

» Conditional Call Divert: Call Divert if unavailable

Normally, if your cellphone is switched off or out of range, any inbound calls are diverted straight to your voicemail. You can change this so that calls get routed to a different number if your cellphone is unavailable.

You use a GSM code like this to activate conditional call divert if unavailable:

**62*number#

You can cancel the conditional call divert if unavailable with this code:

##62#

Finally, you can interrogate the network for the status of your conditional call divert if unavailable with this code:

*#62#

As for unconditional call divert and conditional call divert if no answer, you can also have the conditional call divert if unavailable apply only to one kind of call. You end up with these codes:

*#62# : Interrogate conditional call divert if unavailable, all call types
*#62*11# : Interrogate conditional call divert if unavailable, voice calls
*#62*13# : Interrogate conditional call divert if unavailable, fax calls
*#62*25# : Interrogate conditional call divert if unavailable, data calls

**62*number# : Conditional divert all calls to number if unavailable
**62*number*11# : Conditional divert voice calls to number if unavailable
**62*number*13# : Conditional divert fax calls to number if unavailable
**62*number*25# : Conditional divert data calls to number if unavailable

##62# : Cancel conditional call divert if unavailable, all call types
##62*11# : Cancel conditional call divert if unavailable, voice calls
##62*13# : Cancel conditional call divert if unavailable, fax calls
##62*25# : Cancel conditional call divert if unavailable, data calls

» Conditional Call Divert: Call Divert if busy

If you have call waiting and if it is activated, then your line will become "busy" once you have two correspondents on the line. If you don't have call waiting on your line, or if you do but haven't activated it, then your line will be busy with only one conversation under way. If another person tries to call you while your line is busy, the inbound call is usually shunted straight off to your voicemail so that the caller can leave you a message. This behaviour can be altered so that an inbound call received while your line is already busy gets diverted elsewhere.

The codes are identical to those for unconditional divert and for conditional divert if unavailable, except that the number 67 is used in place of 21 or 62 respectively. So, we end up with this:

*#67# : Interrogate conditional call divert if busy, all call types
*#67*11# : Interrogate conditional call divert if busy, voice calls
*#67*13# : Interrogate conditional call divert if busy, fax calls
*#67*25# : Interrogate conditional call divert if busy, data calls

**67*number# : Conditional divert all calls to number if busy
**67*number*11# : Conditional divert voice calls to number if busy
**67*number*13# : Conditional divert fax calls to number if busy
**67*number*25# : Conditional divert data calls to number if busy

##67# : Cancel conditional call divert if busy, all call types
##67*11# : Cancel conditional call divert if busy, voice calls
##67*13# : Cancel conditional call divert if busy, fax calls
##67*25# : Cancel conditional call divert if busy, data calls

Tips to Solve Uncommon Windows Error Messages

While working on your Windows PC you may come across several common and uncommon computer errors, such as Windows XP Stop 0×0000001E Error and WMP.dll Error Message. These errors may occur when certain conditions on your PC are true.

Discussed in this article are a few steps that you can perform to resolve such computer errors:

Free Up Disk Space

These days, despite having hard disks with a large amount storage space, it does not take long to fill it up. This happens because with the increase in disk space, the space requirements for different software programs and different types of files have also increased. Listed below are some of the tasks that you can perform to free up disk space:

Use Add or Remove Programs or a good third-party program uninstaller to uninstall unwanted programs.
Use the Disk Cleanup utility to get rid of unwanted temporary files, programs setup files, and old system restore points.
Use the Disk Defragmenter tool to consolidate fragmented files and make your data contiguous.

Remove Faulty Programs and Device Drivers

Errors, such as Windows XP Stop 0×0000001E error are known to occur due to problems with a device driver or program. Usually, the name of the faulty device driver or program file appears in the error message. In case this happens, you may perform one of the following tasks to resolve the error:

Use Device Manager or Add or Remove Programs (whichever applies) utility to uninstall the faulty device driver or faulty program reported in the error message.
Visit the device or program manufacturer web site to check if any updates for the software are available—if you find an update, install it to resolve the error.

Update Your System

Several software error messages, such as WMP.dll error message are displayed due to the existence of old versions of program files. To prevent errors such as these, you must always keep your operating system, software programs, and device drivers updated with the latest service packs and security releases. Windows operating systems and many programs and drivers comprise the automatic update feature. You should keep this feature enabled to ensure that the software on your system always stays updated. This will not only help prevent compatibility related errors, but also prevent infections from malware programs that are built around these security lapses.

Scan and Repair the Windows Registry

Computer problems can also occur due to registry bloating. Registry bloating occurs when a large amount of unwanted, obsolete, and invalid entries accumulate within the registry. When the registry bloats up, it becomes unstable and starts generating computer errors. To prevent computer errors due to registry problems, you must regularly scan and repair your registry. As it is difficult to perform manual scan and clean up of the complex registry files, you may use a reliable third-party registry tool to perform the task.

Scan and Remove Malware

Malware programs, such as virus, Trojans, and spyware can generate several computer problems. Two tools that are essential to combat these malicious programs are antivirus and antispyware tools. You must obtain and install these tools on your computer. Additionally, always keep the tools updated with the latest virus database and schedule them to perform full system scans on a regular basis to ensure that your PC remains free of malicious information at all times.

Will your resume get you the interview call?(10 must-dos for a sharper CV.)

IT is an act in creating your personal brand image. Your resume reaches the interviewer before you do. Yet, many people lose out on an interview opportunity thanks to a poorly written one. Your resume is the first step in projecting yourself effectively to the recruiter.

So create an image that you genuinely identify with – it is a sharp world out there and no one is buying false niceties. We address ten important issues related to your resume.

1. Should your resume have a career goal/ objective statement? A resume that is worthy of representing you, should clearly state your career objective. A career objective is an indirect way of advertising what all you would bring to the company/ role. It must display a ‘giving’ attitude and not a ‘taking’ attitude.

Take a look at this: “To achieve an appreciable status in an organization that offers full scope for growth and where I can fulfill my aspiration of becoming a world class software professional.”

And this: “Be a part of an organization that recognises my skills and provides me with suitable environment to perform to the best of my ability.”

Do either of the above display a ‘giving’ attitude? Your answer is correct. They don’t. So now you know how NOT to write an objective statement! It is advisable to keep the objective statement simple and specific. Let it focus on the direct value addition that you can provide.

Example: “A certified Software Programmer seeking opportunity in the area of Software Development in a competitive work environment to utilize my skills to deliver robust and innovative software solutions.”

2. What sequence should your story follow?

Be it work experience or education, always tell the story from the current/ most recent to the first. NEVER write it the other way round.

3. Does your resume need to mention your marital status?

The new age resume does not require you to mention your marital status. However, if the job advertisement clearly states this as a requirement, do fulfil it. Quick Take

* Include a sharp Career Goal

* Choose the pdf format with discretion

* Fonts: Use Times New Roman, Calibri or Verdana

* Run a spell check

* Tweak to suit position and company of a potential employer

* Your latest work stint must appear first

4. How should you treat references?

Unless you have been specifically asked to provide references, it is acceptable to state in your covering letter/ email that you will provide references on request. Usually, two references are sufficient. Try to provide references from the two most recent phases of your career.

It is a good idea to inform the referees that you are giving out their contact information. It will also help if they know what kind of jobs you are applying for.

5. Should you send the resume as an MS Word document or a PDF? Some organisations ask you to upload your resume. Usually they ask for an MS Word document. If you are mailing across your resume, you could choose either format.

A word of caution – do not get carried away if you decide to make it a PDF. Keep it simple – leave out visual histrionics. And whatever software you choose – send the resume in the most commonly used version.

The biggest advantage of using a pdf format is that it preserves the formatting irrespective of the version of the Acrobat Reader version or user settings.

In MS word, however, the formatting can change based on the MS Office version and User Settings, leading to awkward situations like a two-page resume becoming a 3 -page document. Or a section title like Educational Background coming on Page 2 comes with the details going to Page 3.

However, if the company insists on a word document, please send the resume in word format only. Lot of organisations have tools to extract information from Word documents and if you do not send your resume in Word document, your resume may not get processed at all!

6. Should you incorporate links in the resume?

If you are an engineer who writes a technical blog, go ahead and incorporate the link in your resume. If you are a website developer, the links to the pages created by you would certainly help. However, spare the recruiter from links of your personal blogs, photographs and anything and everything that you scatter on the World Wide Web. In fact, providing the link to your personal blog may even prove fatal if you publish office gossip or crib about your job!

7. What sort of job profiles demand a portfolio?

Artists, designers, photographers, models and those from the performing arts definitely need to provide a portfolio. An artist model/ photographer/ designer may want to include a Power Point or PDF, while a dancer/ actor/ singer may want to mention links from sites like YouTube. Irrespective of the type of portfolio, the intention is simply to showcase your best and most relevant work.

8. What fonts / presentation styles make sense?

Go easy on choosing fonts and presentation styles. The most acceptable ones are the simpler ones. It is advisable to use fonts like ‘Times New Roman’, ‘Calibri’ and ‘Verdana’. Do not get tempted by the fancier ones. The resume is not the platform to exhibit your artistic inclinations. Also, keep the fonts and font sizes uniform across different categories in the resume.

You should zero in on a presentation style with just one thing in mind – it should be extremely presentable. By creating minimum chaos, it should elicit the maximum attention.

Some people choose to give the resume a fancy header with their name and contact information in bold. This gives it a ‘letter head’ look. Some go for a more conventional style by listing out such information in bullet points. Either style is absolutely fine.

In writing about your project work, education and work experience, you could provide a box format or a neatly tabulated one.

9. What are the worst resume gaffes? The worst thing you could do is to send in a resume without running a grammar/ spelling check. In this age of MS Word, grammar/ spelling mistakes in a resume are just not tolerated. Needless to say, anyone would straight away trash a resume that is saved as supersexy2010.doc or rockstar.doc. One gentleman I knew failed to get a single interview call after sending out more than 80 applications. I probed a little and was shocked to find out why – he had sent out group mails! Do not try to pass around your resume/ covering letter without modifying it to suit the company / role you are applying for. It is offending if your application reads like:

Dear _______, I am applying for the role of ___________________ at your esteemed organisation _____________________.

It shows and it is NOT acceptable!!!

10. What is the difference in writing a resume for a BPO professional/ Engineer/ MBA? If you are a BPO aspirant, you need to highlight your ability to deal with all kinds of people, chase targets and work in shifts. If you are an engineer, your resume should clearly talk about your projects and internships. Expect a fair number of questions from these areas in the interview. An MBA student would also need to write about projects and training.

Characteristics of a Great Employee

Some years ago a massive study was conducted in America, England and Australia to try to determine the most important characteristics of successful managers. They asked over 100,000 successful managers what they believed was their most valuable skill. The number one answer was hiring the right people. If you want great success in your business then hire a great team. It sounds very simple but what constitutes a great employee? Here are seven qualities of a great employee.

1. A passion for their work.
Most employees come to work for the money; great employees come to work because they love what they do in their job. The first things to look for in a job interview are signs of passion about the job.

If you can build a whole team of people who are passionate about what they do then you will automatically achieve synergy from that team. In other words the team will achieve much more than the total potential of the individuals.

2. A firm belief that they are there to make the business successful.
Every great employee realizes that the only reason the business hires employees is to help the business be successful. The great employee has a genuine desire to help the business succeed and a sense of pride that they are part of that winning formula.

3. A dedication to self improvement and self education.
A great employee doesn't rely on the business to provide them with the necessary education. They are already committed to educating and improving themselves. They are constantly assessing their own results and looking for ways to better those results in the future.

A great employee always demands a higher standard of themselves than the boss demands of them.

4. Good people skills
Regardless of the type of job a person does, they will have to interact with other people at some point in time. Most jobs require constant interaction. A person who understands, and enjoys applying, good people skills will always be a better employee than an equally qualified person who lacks people skills.

A person who builds good working relationships with customers, suppliers, other staff members and management, is a person who is an asset to your business.

5. An ability to organize themselves.
Self organization includes time management, particularly punctuality, an ability to efficiently organize their work load, and an ability to accurately project the time it will take to complete a task.

6. The ability to either work in a team or to lead a team.
A great employee has to either be a good team player of a good team leader. Ideally they can do both and they know when they need to be in team player mode and when they need to be in team leader mode.

7. Respect for the boss
An employee who does not have respect for the boss should become an ex-employee as soon as possible. It is the boss's responsibility to develop and apply the characteristics of a good leader and it is the employee's responsibility to be a loyal follower of that leader.

An employee who lacks respect for the boss is a loose canon that no business can afford!

The next time you have to select a new employee try assessing them on these seven attributes and you will be pleased with your result. It is also valuable to assess your current employees on these seven attributes to determine who needs to be phased out and replaced with someone of better quality.

Create your own shutdown timer

Windows DOS has a shutdown command which can be used as a shutdown timer, as per our time requirements. It can be used for other functions like Logging off, Restarting etc.

Another pranky feature of this commend is, it allows you to shutdown remote computers. But remember, the remote computer you are trying to shutdown should be running with administrative privileges or the remote shutdown facility should not have been disabled.

Syntax:
shutdown -s -t "number of seconds to shutdown" (without quotes)

Example:
shutdown -s -t 120
[This will shutdown your computer within 120 seconds]

To shutdown a remote computer which is present on the same network enter shutdown -s -m 192.168.1.10 -t 100.

To abort a scheduled shutdown enter shutdown -a

The -s parameter in the command specifies that it is going to shutdown the computer. Likewise you can use -r option to restart and -l to logoff.

Type shutdown /help to see a list of options that you can use with shutdown command for different purposes.

Hint:
Type shutdown -i to get a GUI window to do your task easily.

Finding and Removing Spyware from your PC.

What is it? "Spy-Ware" is a malicious little program that comes from various sources, most often hidden in an innocent-seeming download or self-loaded onto your system from a pop-up. So, if you have downloaded music files or games from some unknown source or had a pop-up that wouldn't close right away your PC may be infected with Spyware.

But don't worry. It's not fatal, but it is a major annoyance and an invasion of your privacy, as you will see by the following symptoms:

You get pop-up ads when your browser is not running or when your PC is not online... sometimes you may even see a pop-up that addresses you by name.

When you sign on, your browser start page has changed to something you've never seen before. You change it back, but before long it changes again.

You start a web search with the browser, and a website you've never used before handles the search.

New websites show up in your favorites - but you didn't put them there. Sometimes they even re-appear after you delete them.

A new, strange toolbar appears on your browser even though you didn't install it. Removal attempts fail, or it reappears after you restart your PC.

Your PC suddenly starts running really slowly... usually because some unknown program is using almost all of your system resources.

The modem icon in your system tray flashes like mad even when you're not using the web. Or if you are online, it flashes as if you were making a download when you aren't.

But the worst one of all - everything seems normal. The worst spy that hides in your PC won't leave any obvious warning signs... it just watches everything you do, then runs and tells it's master all about you.

But what can you do about it? The most common ways a PC can become infected is through Pop-ups and downloaded programs.

So, here's what you do:

1) Get a good pop-up killer. I'd recommend either the Alexa Toolbar or the Google toolbar, they're both free and both have good pop-up stoppers.
Alexa Toolbar
Google toolbar

2) Scan for Spyware regularly, and remove it with a tool designed to remove them without messing up anything else.

At least once a week use SpyBot - Search & Destroy
It's a Free download, it's free to use, and you get free updates. This is very likely the best spyware removal tool you will find anywhere. It's free, but the developer asks for donations... normally I would not recommend or ask that any of our visitors make donations for something like this, but they have done a lot of work and the program is so necessary - so please consider a donation.

That's about all it takes. Once you get used to doing it, it's no more of a pain than sweeping the kitchen... something that you gotta do, but you don't really have to pay all that much attention to it.
