5 Simple Ways To Turn Off Facebook’s Photo Viewer

Every change to Facebook has come with a bit of criticism. Most eventually gain acceptance, but some people cotinue to groups about the photo viewer.

The photo viewer creates a lightbox effect.  When you click on a photo in a news feed or album, it pops up in a “theater view” with a black border. You can browse through photos like a slideshow but must click out of the pop-up to get back to the original page. You can’t right-click to save the photo. Instead, you must click “download” in the bottom-left of the pop-up window.
There are five simple ways to turn off the photo viewer. The first two must be done manually each time and the others are extensions that require access to your Facebook profile.
  1. While using the photo viewer, just refresh the page and the lightbox will disappear. The photo can be viewed and saved the old-fashioned way with a right-click.
  2. Delete everything from &theater on in the URL and it will revert back to the old way of viewing photos.
  3. Facebook Photo Theater Killer: Firefox users can download the extension to disable the photo viewer.
  4. Revert FB Photo Viewer: For Chrome users, this reverts to the old version of viewing photos and runs silently in the background. According to the developer, it does not read, transmit or store any of your data.
  5. Better Facebook: The free extension works on browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. There are more than 75 options to change your Facebook experience, including disabling the photo viewer.

Google Android now on 135 million devices

Google Android now on 135 million devices
Among the highlights was certainly Android, which is now said to be present on more than 135 million active devices. According to Google, 550,000 Androids are now activated every day and there have been more than 6 billion App downloads.
Google is categorizing Android as a “high consumer success” product, next to Chrome and YouTube. Page noted that Google is heavily investing in those segments to ensure their “long-term success.” Android appears to be especially growing like a weed as the activation count was at just 500,000 per day a month ago and the total device count was at just 100 million two months ago. Google noted that more than 250,000 apps are now available for Android.

Page also briefly commented on the patent situation of Android and told investors that Google is building its defense against lawsuits. “Obviously we have a number of intellectual property patents in progress not just already issued.” However, he deflected the question by an analyst, by simply adding more numbers explaining the success of Android: 400 different devices, 39 OEMs, 231 carriers in 123 countries: “And that velocity is only increasing. Despite the efforts of some of our competitors, there hasn’t been any slowdown in any of those things,” Page said.
Of course, that may make Android an even more attractive patent suit target. According to Spencer Wang, an analyst with Credit Suisse, Google holds only about 650 patents in total, which less than the number of patents IBM gets approved every 2 months.

7 Things You Should Never Share On Facebook

While there are plenty of things that we all enjoy seeing on Facebook, there are also a ton of things that nobody likes to see. If you post any of the things below, you should consider changing your Facebook habits!

Your Phone Number

Do you have any ex-girlfriends or boyfriends that you don’t want getting in touch with you? A great way to help them reconnect is by publishing your new phone number. The best way to let people know about your new phone number is to text them!

Pictures Of Feet

Oh, did you really just get a pedicure? That’s great news but does everybody really need to see your feet? Unless you are a foot model (congrats if you are!), you really should refrain from posting pictures of your feet.

Uninteresting Baby Photos

So we all know that you are having a baby and it’s great news. However, if you document your entire child’s life on Facebook you’ve gone overboard. There’s a reason they call them home videos: Leave them at home for your private collection. We all love entertaining baby videos like this one, but do we really need to see every update? Everybody loves a cute baby, but documenting every moment like the applesauce they just ate, really is unnecessary.

It’s Complicated

When you’re in high school it’s funny to say that you are in a relationship with someone else, but if you are sharing with the world that you have hit a rough patch, you aren’t doing yourself any favors. Seriously, hold off on posting that things aren’t easy for you right now. While your friends may post their sympathies in follow on comments, they really actually have pity for you. If you need support, call your friends, don’t post about it on Facebook for everybody to see!

Checking In To Common Locations

If you’re snorkeling in the great barrier reef, I’d recommend checking in on Facebook. However if you are picking up a Snickers bar at 7-11, there’s really no benefit to posting about it. The best things to share on Facebook are those things that are exciting and interesting, but driving through the McDonald’s drive thru is really not something your friends want to know about.

Something For Sale

There’s a reason Craigslist exists: to sell things. While you may have a used bike to sell, the odds that one of your friends wants to buy it right now is much less than someone buying it on Craigslist or another site. Seriously, if you have something to sell, go somewhere that the buyers are actually shopping!

Poorly Taken Photos

Your pet may be cute, and honestly, that’s something I enjoy seeing, but if you mess up the shot, it hurts your image. The plane you are taking off in may be exciting, but seeing the flash in the window reflection is painful for the trained eye! Frame the shot, make sure the flash is properly set, and shoot. If the photo doesn’t turn out well, take the photo again and share that to Facebook instead!

Facebook Releases Group Chat

In a press conference at Facebook’s Palo Alto headquarters, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social network is releasing Group Chat to its 750 million members.
The multi-person chat feature was inspired by the chat functionality inside Facebook Groups and will be incorporated in the new design of Facebook Chat. Group Chat will be rolled out to users beginning Wednesday.
“Now when your friends can’t figure out what movie to see, you can just add them to a chat and decide together,” Facebook video chat engineer Phillip Su says of the new feature. “To include more friends in your conversation, simply select Add Friends to Chat.”
More than 50% of users on Facebook are active in Facebook Groups, and Groups have an average of seven people, the company revealed Wednesday. The idea, then, is to make Group Chat more ad-hoc and accessible to all Facebook users.
In addition to Group Chat, Facebook is also releasing its highly-anticipated Skype-powered video chat feature Wednesday.

How to Use Strong and Secure Passwords

In all probability, most of us would be aware that using obvious or guessable passwords such as “password” or your pet's name isn't a good idea at all.
But then what options do you really have to come up with a strong and secure password?
First things first, you should have a different, fairly long and very strong password for each account. It's tempting to use the same password for all of your online accounts, but doing so puts every account in jeopardy if one of them gets hacked.
